एक बार की बात है। एक जंगल में एक चतुर लोमड़ी रहती थी। उसे अपनी बुद्धि पर बेहद घमंड था। एक बार वो एक कुत्ते के पास गयी और गर्व के साथ बोली, "सुनो कुत्ते भाई! अगर जंगली बाघ और चीते, या फिर भेड़िये हम पर हमला करते हैं, तो मेरे पास बचने के कई सारे तरीके हैं!" कुत्ते को जानकार हैरानी हुई। उसने पूछा, "कौन कौन से तरीके हैं तुम्हारे पास?" लोमड़ी ने मुस्कुराते हुए सारे तरीके करके बताये। पहले वो एक झाडी में छिप गयी। उसके बाद बबूल के काँटों को छलांग से पार करती हुई दौड़ने लगी। फिर उसके बाद एक पेड़ को आड़ में छिप गयी। फिर नदी को तैरकर पार किया और दूसरे किनारे पर जाकर हाथ हिलाने लगी। कुत्ते को ये सब देखकर आश्चर्य हुआ। उसने कहा, "अरे लोमड़ी बहन! में तुम्हारी तरह इतना होशियार नहीं हूँ! मुझे तो बस एक ही काम आता है!"
